I have an MA in Creative Writing from Victoria University of Wellington, and my publication credits include Sport, Etchings, Takahe, Turbine, Snorkel and JAAM. I am currently enjoying the Scottish summer in Edinburgh (I'm on my third umbrella); my hobbies include fishing for NZ athletes on the BBC's Olympic coverage and giving Spanish people directions.
The Bumblebee
The instrument my grandfather gave me was not a ukulele or an old oil drum
It was a horn the size of a city block
For which I've never had the lungs.
The garden my grandfather tended was a single pollen-heavy flower
All manner of insects visited
Though none was the perfect fit.
The history my grandfather told me was full of passengers and needles
The good and the not-so-good all got to ride
All got the jab.
The horn, the flower, the history: with clarity I see my grandfather.
