before you give her away
Looking at stars scarpelled
out of midnight blackness
an icy southern cross
demanding new directions, my
daughter departs tomorrow and
will lift her chin
to follow these lights
along a different garden’s
silhouette. We’re trading places
and now it’s me
that will wait for
her light quickening steps.
